    Those who colonise the land of others always feel guilt. Americans feel it when the Native American is mentioned; Israelis feel it when Palestinians protest – Wright’s poem is about guilt and also the fear that guilt causes to the invader and the coloniser. She uses the metaphor of the blue crane as being the indigenous population (Palestinian, Native American or in this case the aborigine) and this bird like all indigenous peoples has a calm that the invader will never know. The last four lines say that anything from the past – a driftwood spear – disturbs the invader and somehow this invader must now try to ‘quiet a heart accused by its own fear.’ – an impossible task!
